Default Soleniod Question

How long will a new 36 volt solenoid last on a 48 volt system?

I have seen them last anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 years .....

haha. I might try it out because it is inevitable that I will have to get a new one.

I ran my 36v solenoid in my 48v conversion for 2 years without issue, although I DID keep the control circuit at 36v. If the control circuit is also 48v the life of the 36v solenoid will be shortened. How much? It's a crapshoot.

The RXV carts run a HD 36v solenoid and they have 48+V running thru them. And yes they have problems.

If you are running a 36v solenoid on a 48v cart with 8v batteries, simply short wire the solenoid to the 40v battery (1 less than the full pack) and it will work fine.

If you use the rated control voltage to switch the solenoid, it should last awhile.

When you increase the voltage above the rating, the coil inside will draw more current because of its resistance. This extra current leads to more heat inside the solenoid.

Another idea I just had was to use a current limiting resistor in series with the coil. This will limit the maximum amount of current that can flow through the coil.

If you know the resistance of the coil now, you can easily calculate the value of the resistor you need.
