I always thought that's what those "secret" instructions were that people were selling on FleaBay were about, but it turns out they were talking about epsom salts. The notion of dumping salt of any kind into my batteries just makes me cringe!

I have never used epsom salt either but I do have a friend who is a member here who did use it on some batteries that were "shot" and wouldn't charge up. I think he got another yeas or so out of the batteries after the epsom salt treatment. I'm not advising people do this, just that it can extend the life of some batteries. I just buy new ones myself.
