Good thing is the battery is a month old so I can get the new one free. I hear ya on the starter. I do have plans to open it up and check it. Could be its calling for excessive power as Pachanga said causing the battery drain.

Thing that still does not jive is I am showing 15.5 charge back to the battery-that means the battery should be fully charged- when the slow start issue shows its like the battery is toast. Basically a click and a 2" movement of the clutch. If the starter is having issues wouldn't it do it all the time?

I can run it without the battery hooked up so I know its charging.

Hook a jumpbox on to the cables [no battery] and it fires right up.

Today after work I am going to clean the snot out of the terminals, cut and reconnect the cables and if time permits pull the starter.

Good thing we change the clocks sunday- I need another hour of daylight!!!!

If the starter just moves a couple " , then I would start to question the starter armature or brushes.

I would also follow Smallblock's lead, He is the most knowledgeable person on this site about Yamaha's. After a couple tests, he will already know, bad starter, replace it. You will take the starter apart, and try to see what's wrong, and is it correctable.

I think the stickies at the top of the page would also guide you to your problem.

After going back to scan this post. buy new cables, not clean and reattach ends. If that doesn't do it, get into the starter. I would do the starter anyway, just to have a reliable car.

Just got home and I bought a set of cables- thought the same about the cut and replace deal.

I also thought that I might be getting a false reading on my charge- I am taking it from my battery connectors, not the actual battery. So maybe i am not getting a charge to the battery and the cable ends are dirty or crap on the inside where they touch the battery.

This would explain why when I hook a jumpbox to the clamps alone [battery disconnected] it fires right up.

Its probably the starter but maybe I will get lucky with the cables.

Just a last thought. Recommended battery....group 24 (the size of the battery) and 600 CCA (cold cranking amps). With your engine having 155 to 175 lbs of compression, a low CCA battery can cause a "hesitation" when starting, like I said, just another thought.

The starter is ok if that truly happens.

675 CCA and group 24 battery so at least I have that going right!!

I am charging the battery as I write to full power so when I change the cables I am testing things with full power. It was about 50% drained but I was pushing the pedal a lot for testing purposes.

As i said earlier,It can have trouble starting but still charge properly.A starter/generator performs its' functions by cause of rotation. If you power it,it becomes a motor,If you spin it,it creates voltage. My starter in my truck will crank it right up when cold, but run it five minutes and no-go,add a jump, fires instantly(and the timing is dead-on,not an advance problem). If the Armature is getting high-resistence thru it,it needs more amperage than you can give it,thus the jump-box making it start. It requires the extra amperage you gave it to turn it.Have it tested, more than likely it will need a rebuild.

You are probably right and I just can't face the fact that I need to put MORE money in this thing! I am pulling the starter today and give it a good cleaning and looksie.

How much for a rebuild? Am I better just buying a used?

Depending on what is wrong might be $40 might be $150.A reman is around $200-$300 depending on brand, and vendor you buy from.If you have a friend with similar unit, swap out to see if it cures it.Taking it apart won't show much unless a brush or field is trashed(not likely, but possible).Don't use any cleaner other than brake-clean if you do go into it,and make sure you let it dry for a while or blow it out with air,or you will get a flaming suprise!A good rebuilder will usually test it for free or almost free, and if there is a problem you can decide then if you want to repair or rebuild it.The place i use will only fix the minimum if you ask them to,but their rebuilds are fair-priced and well done.Run it to a rebuilder this morning, save the trouble of tearing it down, and let them give you the info you need.Hope this helps.
