Unless you are holding the peddle to the floor you are wasting some amperage as you go. That is why it is important to convert to Solid State speed control.
Once converted to SSSC you can sip the amperage without waste.

It really is a no brainer upgrade

Ok, the cypher is going to get really smelly now. I've calculated the speed to be 20.9 mph today. A little math (I know I promised no public math but....) with 23" tires and a stock gear ratio of 12.44:1 the motor is turning right at 3800 rpm! Great job PQ! Buit wait it gets better.

The cart weight is 720lbs plus me. I found a gradiant hill of about 8% and was able to go about 75 yards before losing power. So If Power = Mass*Gravity*Vv(rate of cliimb) then I'm getting about 2979 watts or 3.7hp (Great job PQ!).
Now Scottyb mentioned the loss of amperage due to using a resistor cart. That is correct but before I start digging into controllers to check their relative efficiency let's see my amperage draw right now, foot to the floor.

1 Joule/second is a watt so we can use half the battery voltage to calculate amps during acceleration (joules=1/2M*Vsquared) and then add the same calculations for climbing and cruise and get a total amp draw of about 160.

I have a tendancy to only go foot to the floor or idle so as not to waste the battery draw (all or nothing since usisng a resistor cart!). I'm goiing to have to get the specs on some controllers to see the advantage to using less current for longer vs. full current for short bursts.

Now I'm going to have to do all the math again at 48V to see what the needed strentgh (ratings) of the compnents will be if a add 12v.

Many owners use the 36 volt motors as they give real boost in power compared to 48 volt motors when converting. I would spend the funds to get your 36 volt motor rebuilt to get it in top condition.

Several sponsors on this forum that I have heard make a kit designed for any specific needs speed-power and have very good diagrams of installation including SCOTTYB and Plumb Quick and others.
