1998 DS Gas - Clutch turns over easy by hand - no compression
I picked up a few carts that have been sitting for some time and I have yet to try and start them. I am assuming the engines are blown as there is no "compression stroke" when turning the drive clutch over, it will just keep spinning by hand.
Before I open them up, does anyone know if I am looking at blown pistons or could it just be stuck open valves? thanks! |

Pull the valve cover and see what is moving.

Also, these motors are cake to turn over by hand. If you cant have a helper shine a flashlight into the spark plug hole to verify the piston is in fact moving up and down, you can stick a long 3/8ths ratchet extension in there, and slowly turn the motor over by hand, making sure the extension doesn't bind. Provided the piston is in motion, there is technically a "compression stroke." However, if the valves or rings are shot, it wont build the needed compression. Cheap compression testers are available, and worth the money for troubleshooting these carts. |

And something else to look for...
If the carts are "key start" and not pedal start, they may have an ACR (Automatic Compression Relief valve) Which has a compression of 75psi! Most (2000+) pedal start engines without an ACR have a tag on it like this: 021 (3).JPG Just a thought! |

ok, its pedal start and I took the valve cover off of one and both valves seem to move properly, one after the other. I don't want to try and run them for a compression test and possibly further damage them internally so I'm just guessing before I open one up for inspection.
Has anyone had a similar situation and it turned out to just be the rings or piston? I'm hoping the cylinder will still be in good shape as I don't hear any grinding. Anything else to look for? they all have oil (really black) and I don't see any obvious leaks. |

You could have the butterfly valve out of the carb. stuck under the intake valve or exhaust. You can do a pressure test to see where the airs going.
