Club Car DS - New to Speed Upgrades, Where to Start?
'08 Hunter Green Club Car DS
Here is all I know about my cart: Lift kit, with 23" A/T tires Extra flip seat on the back No stereo Turn Signals, Brake Lights, and Head Lights 48v system, with fresh Duracell Ultra batteries Forward/Reverse is a switch besides my right knee No Tow/Run switch to be found Battery Cables are roughly 1/4" including the mylar jacket Motor P/N: 102237701 Motor Model #: 5BC59JBS6360 Voltage: 48v Horsepower: 3.10 Special Service This unit runs 12-13mph on flat ground, and I would like it to be a bit faster, as well as have a little more torque if possible. Where would you start with the motor upgrades to get the most bang for the buck? |

Update: has the F-N-R switch by your right knee, no tow switch
Also, does not beep or brake when pushed manually with the key on |

Re: Club Car DS - New to Speed Upgrades, Where to Start?
Sounds like a regular ole series drive cart assuming the back side of the F&R lever has about 4 big high amperage cables connecting to it.
Series drive carts produce more torque than speed. Likely you are in for a controller and motor upgrade to get the speed you want. A little more info about the cart and your performance needs would help... see questions below. Basic upgrades for series carts include HD F&R switch, 2g cable set, 500a controller, 400 a solenoid, & motor in that order. What size tires are on the cart? How many people ride on the cart? Cargo Box or trailer? Is the electrical system 36 or 48 volts? What top speed is desired? Is the used on or off the road? Is the terrain hilly? If yes, steep or mild hills? Is the footing sandy or muddy? |

See responses below:
What size tires are on the cart? - 22" How many people ride on the cart? - 2, 99% of the time. Cargo Box or trailer? - No Is the electrical system 36 or 48 volts? 48v What top speed is desired? - It goes 12-13 now, would like a top speed around 18-20 if possible, but want to do it economically. Is the used on or off the road? - Both, just through the neighborhood, and some grassy fields. Is the terrain hilly? If yes, steep or mild hills? - Mild hills off road, on road is flat Is the footing sandy or muddy? - It could potentially be after rains, or if we go looking for some mud |

Do you think the speed sensor needs replacement? See above where it doesn't limit the roll or beep when in gear and no brake applied.

This cart does not use a speed sensor....what I did to get the speed I was looking for was installed high speed gears in the rear end...about $500 total. Made a huge difference.

Where do you think I would up at if I bought one of the PlumQuick Bandit Motors, and then did the following in monthly steps;
Upgraded wires via CartsUnlimited HD F&R Lever via CartsUnlimited Upgraded Solenoid via CartsUnlimited .... and then eventually doing the controller when I save up that $$$$ |

Re: Club Car DS - New to Speed Upgrades, Where to Start?
Because it is a series motor...if it's in good repair...I would upgrade to bigger tires, something in a street tread that you can run 28 to 30 lbs of air pressure and then seriously look at the high speed gears...you don't have to upgrade the solenoid and switch to run the PlumQuick motor but when you upgrade the controller that's when those items need upgrading. Scotty offers kits for upgrades that include the controller, solenoid and f/r switch when you are ready and that will save you money. The reason I like the rear end gear change is the series motor system you have has great torgue and that is what works best with bigger tires and the high speed gears...my opinion from my own experience with a similar cart...it's fast!

Re: Club Car DS - New to Speed Upgrades, Where to Start?
Had my stock controller upgraded to 400 amps by FSIP. Installed GE D392 motor with 2ga cables, added copper bars on F/R, stock solenoid and 6" a arm lift with 23" tires. Hauls wife and I 30+mph for past two years.
