How to mount a hitch to the frame of a Precedent with a rear seat?
I have searched for forums for examples of this and I think I am running into a situation because of the seat I am using. I installed a Steeleng HD rear seat and the way it mounts interferes with the tow hitch that mounts to the suspension mounting points (pics attached). I contacted Steeleng and they don't have a hitch for this seat and did not recommend any other hitch. The step plate has square tubing but it is not as deep other seats step plates, and so the other kind of hitch that mounts only to the step plate does not work. Then there is also the challenge of the grab bar that supports the seat when folded out being installed in the middle of the step plate where a hitch would normally go. My goal is to have a frame mounted hitch so I can pull heavier loads that extends beyond the step plate of the rear seat.
Any thoughts on the best way to do this? I am thinking of hacking the frame hitch apart and extending the mounting 'tabs' out 10" or so to allow the hitch to extend beyond the step plate. Frame hitch: Rear seat step plate hitch that doesn't fit. The mounting distance front to back is over 10", I only have 7.5": |

What kind of loads are you needing to haul, also what will be the tongue weight? Having your hitch point behind the rear step will make your cart pretty much useless and potentially dangerous on any grade with any serious load. To handle a decent towed load the hitch point has to be as close to the rear axle as possible, usually right under the rear bumper. Also the higher the hitch the more unstable your whole cart will be when towing. 12" high from the ground will give you good traction when pulling and not try to topple the cart over when turning or backing up at an angle. Here are acouple of pics of the one I put on mine. I know it is a DS but the principles are the same. With a little adapting of yours you could tie into the frame and not interfere with the footboard supports. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Re: How to mount a hitch to the frame of a Precedent with a rear seat?
Good questions. I only plan on pulling a trailer loaded with 1 yard+ of mulch once or twice a year -- that will be the heavy one. Maybe 100 to 200 pounds of tongue weight. At other times it will be pulling the garbage can down the driveway, hauling a tiny yard cart, etc. No grades, all flat land.
I used to have a lifted DS with a frame hitch (so close to the axle) and it pulled the trailer around, albeit slowly, just fine. I'm not seeing a way to mount a hitch to a lifted cart where it is under the rear seat but still accessible. I would love to see examples, however! |

Ok, well you don't have to worry too much then. I caught the word "heavier" and figured you needed to move stuff in the 1 to 3 ton range. Unless you have a really big mulch trailer a hitch bolted to the footboard will probably suffice. I am sure others will chime in shortly! PS; pic of the hitch when bolted to the frame.

Re: How to mount a hitch to the frame of a Precedent with a rear seat?
After thinking through this again because of the rear support that holds up the seats I will really need something that is frame mounted and extends out quite a bit. The Steeleng seat is unique in that it mounts underneath the bumper and blocks any of the frame hitches I have found. And I have to use the rear support that is on the step plate because that is the only thing holding up the flipped over seat. Without it the seat would just flop over. Looks like this won't be a simple solution -- bummer.
Old Post: I have to admit I am tempted to just bolt one of these on the back square steel border of the step plate. I could see this bending a lot if I overload it, however. |

I have this mounted on my cart. I use the hitch to pull the Golf Cart Trailer after I remove the golf cart. Trailer weighs around 450 pounds +/-, it's a Kendon Standup double wide motorcycle trailer with the rails removed for the bikes. The Receiver is from Harbor Freight and is cheap, bolts to the rear seat floor board.

Maybe you could grind off and reattach one of the brackets to fit your spacing. A u-bolt might work if you don't have access to a welder.
I fabbed mine using a 2" receiver tube from Harbor Freight. It looks just like your "Rear seat step plate hitch that doesn't fit." It is not frame attached but suits my needs. I pull my jetski with tongue weight around 75 pounds, but I've stood on it several times so I know it's good for 200 (ok, maybe closer to 210). I also picked up an ATV 3 in 1 hitch ball mount from Amazon. I like that it works for a hitch pin, ball, or tow rope/chain. |

Re: How to mount a hitch to the frame of a Precedent with a rear seat?
Thanks everyone for the help. I picked up the Harbor Freight hitch that scubabud mentions and already had the ATV 3 in one ball mount that kshoemaker mentioned. I'm not sure if the ATV mount is long enough to get past my rear hand rail, but I will figure that part out when I get to it. I hope to dig into it tonight and drill some extra holes in my rear seat step plate to get this mounted up. I will post pictures when I am done.

Meh, I’m not very impressed with this Steeleng HD seat — it’s not very HD. I don’t trust the step plate to take too much pulling with how it’s mounted. I got the Harbor Freight hitch mounted but found out the ATV hitch is not nearly long enough. I used a 7” hitch extension as a test at that allows it to be long enough but isn’t adequate for use — too much droop and movement. I’ll keep you all posted on what I find and am interested I any suggestions you all have.
