2003 FE290 Smokes A Bit When Warmed Up
Just got a new-to-me 2003 Club Car. Once it warms up it smokes a few puffs of blue smoke when you slow down or stop and then take off again. Once you're running at steady rpm it stops smoking until the next slowdown/re-accelerate. And even then it doesn't seem to do it every time.
What's my most likely cause? I've heard rings and valve seals seem to be the main culprits. I'm somewhat new to FE290s, I've mostly only worked on my KF82 flathead carts. I've also read that FE290 mufflers can sometimes have oil in them as a result and can be roasted over a fire to quickly burn out residual oil. I assume these are fairly easy fixes for someone such as myself who has worked on gas DS carts quite a bit over the past 10 years. I did a side cover gasket on my 2005 cart but have never torn apart the top end of one of these OHV motors. Anyone have any advice or maybe just a good video on rebuilding one of these? |

I’d think valve stem seals and or valve guides since it doesn’t do it all the time. I had to replace a guide recently due to it being wore out and caused the valve to coke up so bad it wouldn’t close. The engine is very easy to work on and fix it but is a pain in the butt pulling though

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I pulled the FE290 in my ‘05 recently so I’m no stranger to that task.

How was the replacement of the valve guides? I'm reading that you "need" a valve guide arbor Club Car p/n 101641202 to remove them but I can't find it for sale online anywhere. I'm guessing there's an "unofficial" way to R&R them?

Buy an oem one and take it to a machine shop to have them pressed out and then pressed back in and then honed to size
I have one if you would like it I won’t ever use it |

I know my machine shop charged 200 to do one guide touch up the seats for the new valves and then surfaced the head
