I had disconnected the battery to the golf cart via the Anderson connector, my previous problem was that I let a friend use and and not knowingly he ran it all the way dead (not all the way just to the point where the cart wouldn't move 36 volts I think it was at), the voltage was too low for my charger to kick on, so I had nick send me a charger that kicked on at a lower voltage

Were you monitoring cells in any way or just relying on the BMS to do its job? Curious as to how out of balance your cells were.

When you ran the pack down past 36v you raised the internal IR of one cell. Using a charger with low voltage turned off didnt help either. This is a cascade effect that started the first time you ran the pack down below a minimum LV. Sorry its an expensive and scary lesson.

Home owners insurance will likley cover everything but a small deductable.

Running the Lithium cells to the point the charger will not work can create potential issues inside the cells (shunts) that can create problems later.

As long as the cells were evaluated after the incident to make sure they were charging to the same voltage and holding the same capacity as before, it should have been fine.

A lot of times the HV cell cutoff is just done by an "enable" signal to the charger rather than a physical relay disconnect of the charging current path, do You have an external relay to isolate the charger in case of an HV condition?

Sorry for your loss on that nice cart and I am glad of your quick reaction anticipating a catastrophic event.

Hopefully some good information can be derived from this situation to create better safety systems for other users.

It depends on the policy. I have riders on my home owners policy for things like my tractor, riding mower ect. It just depends on how they have there policy structured. I would definetly have them contact there agent.

Depends on your parents home owners insurance, and if your parent(s) want to file a claim. That's a conversation and decision that needs to be had and made between you and the parent(s).

On a positive note, you did a GREAT job of saving your house by getting your cart out of the garage just in the nick of time. Things could have been a lot worse without your quick actions.
