Default Charging a 36v with a 12v charger?

This may be a dumb question. I searched, but didn't find the answer.

Can I charge my batteries with a 12v car charger until my 36v charger arrives? If I just disconnect them, split them in to pairs (2 6volts per pair) and then charge them that way, will it work? Will my garage burn down? Will I spend a lifetime regretting the decision?

Any help is appreciated. I'm ready to try this puppy out and I'm still in search of a charger.
