Default Grounding

As far as I can tell I have a 1987 X 4 the last ownr wired in 2solenoids instead of 1 I am no electrician but I thought I had it figured out and then cooked the wire between the two solenoids disconnected the engine ground and everything is fine does that mean coil is grounding a generator? Any help will be greatly appreciated
