Default 1987 G2 Electric HELP!!!

All

I just bought a 1987 G2 Electric golf cart yesterday. I installed 6 new trojan batteries as the old ones were shot. I noticed when i hooked the system up, i got a pretty large spark when I connected the negative cable up. Next issue I had was the key switch, even when in the off position and the key pulled out, the cart will still go forward or backwards when engaging the accelorator. I did replace that today, but same thing with a new key switch, it still will drive without a key in it and turned off. I also notice that the resister (bed spring) gets really warm. Can anyone help me out on this please?!!?! I am new to golf carts but not to fixing things. I found a wiring diagram online, but it doesnt make alot of sense to me. (I know, Im a newbie!!!)

sounds like the solenoid is stuck closed (allowing power flow)
disconnect a small post on the solenoid and see if cart runs
if it does solenoid is bad

Sorry i am new to this. I have a small negative, small positive, large neg, and large pos on the solenoid. So disconnect the small neg and pos then? If it works that means the solenoid is bad? Would that cause the resister spring to heat up too?

yes , current is flowing through system (always neg to pos)
you can remove ether small wire or both

Thanks for your quick response. The two small ones run into a plug. I undid the plug. Turned the key on, and the cart ran. Turned the key off, and the cart ran. Frustrating! What else could it be? Also, the resister bed spring got super hot again after a couple of minutes. Appreciate your help!!
