It is a audible warning device (beeper) to let you (and anyone near cart) know you are about to back up.

In later carts it stays on as long as F/R switch is in reverse, but from what I can gather from tracing out the lines on the schematic, this one stops beeping when pedal is pushed.

It is a safety feature, so it should be operable for liability reasons, but some guys disable them on hunting buggies.

That's what I thought , back up alarm, I think this one has never worked
My rebuild is coming along now ready for final assembly .
I'll send pictures when finished.

I hope you can tell the before from the after pictures

new brushes ,brush holder,brush leads, bearing,grease seal, turned commutator,
removed cleaned and varnished the field coils.
drained the rear axle and filled it with Lucas 75-90 full synthetic, cleaned solenoid and reversing switch.

runs good so far

Looks good!

I don't know the first thing about resistor buggies, but shouldn't there be some sort of enclosure to protect the resistors, or is that how they usually are? Just looks kinda exposed.

there is a heavy metal cover ,which I will replace ,
but they need air space to cool , they run hot.

That is how a resistor cart works.
When the pedal is all the way down, fully battery voltage is applied to just the motor.
When pedal is less than all the way down, one or more resistor coils are in the series circuit and some of the available energy is converted to heat by the resistor(s) instead of mechanical motion by the motor.

Resistor carts drain battery at about same rate regardless of throttle setting (speed).
