Default Grinding in Reverse?

Took my Villager 8 out for a spin this morning and hit the trail in the backyard.

It's been a year since I've been back ther and it was overgrown with brush, so I had to throw it in reverse and got a bunch of grinding noise

Put in in forward and it worked fine, then back into reverse and it started grinding again

Had to rock it back and forth a few times, but I was finally able to get her into reverse.

Now reverse gear feels like a crap shoot

I think the cable might be out of adjustment, but I've never had to mess with it before

OK, turns out the cable frayed just above the muffler

Disconnected it and the tranny engages fine in both forward and reverse when I switch the lever by hand.

Hopefully my local Club Car dealer won't bend me over too much when they call back with a price quote

My local CC dealer has them for $90 in their warehouse, but will take a few days to arrive.

Are they all the same throughout the years?

The only ones I see on EBay are listed from 2009 and up (my cart is a 99)

Do you have the Illustrated Parts List for your buggy? Not sure if this one is the right one, but on pages 6-2 to 6-4, it looks like the part number is 101672701. Google found a site with cross ref part 101539802. No hits for me on 101672701 on Ebay, but the other one hits a $130 listing.

Hope this helps a bit...

Yeah, that one looks more like the one I have.

My local CC dealer actually just called back and said there's a new part number that supersedes the old one and they have they just happen to have that one in stock, so I'll head out there tomorrow with my old one in hand just to match it up.

I had the same issue on another Villager 8 years ago, so I'll most likely put a ceramic heat sleeve to protect this one from the exhaust.

Pix of the old one I just pulled out...

Looks like someone wrapped up the heat shield with electrical tape and the cable itself doesn't appear to have full travel

OK, picked up new cable yesterday.

As you can see, the bend that goes over the muffler looks to be updated with an enclosed elbow tuding

Still gunna wait on the heat sleeve to arrive before installing it.
