Unhappy my new project is having spark issues.

got an 1983 ezgo marathon I'm working on with a rebuilt motor., stock carb getting gas out of the exhaust tried putting in a new coil/ ignitor and a new solenoid and key switch... have tried starting it with a spark plug see thru tester on it to check the spark going to the plug, glows lighter orange but won't pop..any ideas to get a good spark to it so it will start???

Look through the exhaust and move the piston up and down. If you see a square hole in the side of the piston, it's in backwards.

Check the read plate and make sure it is not damage and that it is not just letting it dump gas in the motor that’s probably not the problem but check because they are fragile and can bend easy

Check the fuel pump for a ripped lower diaphragm. Did you check the piston? What is your compression?

I wouldn’t crank it anymore than you have until you can verify it’s installed correctly. If it’s backwards it’ll wreck the cylinder, rings, and piston in a hurry.

Wink Re: my new project is having spark issues.

piston is in correct..kinda figured out that the contacts on the direction shifter is not making a good clean connection so not much battery voltage getting to the engine/spark system..
