Default Are my batteries good?

I have an 1984 36V cart. My batteries ran almost dry last fall. I filled them and charged them. Since then, I'm getting anywhere from 38-40v on the charge. The cart has very little power. The solenoids are about 5 years old. The mirco switches in the accelerator box are new. How do I know if my batteries are good or not? They are about 6 yrs old.

You need to check the voltage with a digital meter right after removing the charger and then again several hours later to see if there is any drop. You should see around 38.20 volts for the latter test. Then check the voltage of each individual battery. None should be below 6.3 volts.

Then leave the voltmeter connected to the pack and drive the cart. Note how low the voltage goes while driving. If you see below 37 volts while driving on level roads at medium speed, chances are the batteries are dead.

The age of the batteries and the fact that they were dry assures them being in need of replacement.
