Default Steeling column / how do i remove this part?

Our e-z-go cart was totalled but my husband was able to weld the frame, allign the wheels and we've bought a new steering column.

We're down to this final step and I dont want to damage anything when I take it apart. Ive attached a pic and wonder if anyone can tell me how to remove this gear?

I've never replaced a steering column, but can you do it by taking the steering wheel off. Might can try that until someone else responds.

The assembly inside the shaft is attached to this gear. Cant move the shaft over the assemby (toward the steering wheel) and cant move it over the gear/pinion. ...

.. or is the assembly inside small enough to fit through this little hole shown in the pic? If thats the case then it will work. We've been soaking the steering wheel bolt to remove rust but once its loose we're definately planning on trying that too. Thanks for the info.

So all you had to do was take the steering wheel off? They are usually easier to take off and get leverage on while they are still on the cart, I can see where it might have been rough.
