Buy the cheapest HEI module and coil you can find. I bought both off E-bay for less than $35, including shipping.

A simple continuity test will determine the polarity. If worst comes to worst, it's two wires. If it doesn't work the first time swap the two wires on the coil. Heat is a killer of electronic components. Simply bolting it to the frame isn’t going to cut it over time. I would recommend using a heat sink (radio shack)of some sort and silicon grease between the HS and the module. My HEI module gets just barely warm to the touch. |

If you're looking to add some pep, have you considered the shorter belt -or- possibly shimming your clutch? The belt is a $30 5-minute swap and adds quite a bit of low-end and accel to the cart ... The same results can be had by shimming your clutch, but that's a bit more involved (but then again, about $3)

@ Seahunter - mine has been good for several hundred hours of runtime bolted to the frame - you just need to make sure and clean a completely bare spot on the frame so you get good thermal conductivity (also, depending on the module, some have a small molded plastic alignment tab on the rear that needs to be nipped off with a pair of endcutters to ensure full contact)

update- the 90 mustang 4 cyl coil does not like heat. it would run good for a while then fade. wait while and it ran, then fade. put the stock one on and all is good. don't know if it was a bad coil or too much heat- thinking heat. did like the way was mounted tho.
 still looking for the perfect cheap coil! maybe a bosch blue? |

An oil filled coil has to be mounted vertically(or close to it) to keep the windings fully covered in oil for cooling. I'm not sure if those are oil filled or not
