Running hot issue again
I know this subject has been rode hard already but I can't find a definitive answer.
My '04 gas DS was fine until one day it wouldn't start, no spark. Figured out it was the ignitor. Disconnected the ground wire and rode it until I got an ignitor. So as usual, I got the ignitor and have yet to install it, wasn't using the cart for long periods. But now I find that on a 10 minute ride it will will run hot and I get a strong rich fueling smell (I think from the exhaust). Is this caused by the ignitor? Does the ignitor affect timing and cause it to run hot? So if I'll just get off my *** and put the new ignitor on all will be well? Help would be much appreciated. |

Re: Running hot issue again
So can the ignitor on it's own cause the fe290 to run hot?

Re: Running hot issue again
Welcome to BGW slofut!
I'm pretty sure that there's a "terminology" problem here... I'm guessing that your talking about the little box on the lower front of the engine? That would be an RPM (Rev) Limiter! on older (1992-96) FE290's there was an ignitor underneath the rev limiter, 1997+ FE engines have the ignitor built into the coil! That being said... No, the limiter won't cause the engine to run hot! (connected or not) Most likely you have a fuel/air mixture problem, (Kawasaki FE engines are VERY finicky with their fuel/air mixture) If the cart has been sitting for long periods, almost always, the Ethanol in the fuel tends to play havoc with the fuel delivery ports/jets etc., A few things to do... check the air filter, and replace it if necessary, check your spark plug, and replace it if necessary, and give your carburetor a really good cleaning! IF cleaning the carb still doesn't work, buy a new one from one of BGW's fine sponsors, Or... you can buy a cheap Chinese knock-off from the internet! (but you may not get warranty help if needed.) And premix Seafoam additive to your fuel on a regular basis. (1 ounce to 1 gallon of fuel) |

Thanks much for the reply. Yes I'm sure there's probably a terminology problem. I haven't done much to the motor on this cart, it's always been totally dependable so I'm pretty green in this area. I did clean the carb once. It's an 04, I didn't unbolt the rev limiter (which still works with the wire disconnected) I just disconnected the ground wire. Cart would then start as usual and run, and the rev limiter would still kick in. Thanks for the check list, I'll post back with results. Bill |

At WOT (wide open throttle) the governor will slow the engine RPM's down to a respectable speed per manufacturers recommendations! The Rev limiter will shut off the spark to the engine if the governor has been by-passed or beyond the speed the governor can regulate it! (a back up safety feature) It's a common thing with Club Car rev limiters... when they go bad, you get a "no spark" scenario, as long as you don't go down a long, steep hill, you'll be okay with the ground disconnected. Follow up with your results! |
