Default Club Car DS gas grinds in reverse!

Hello. I know this has been covered before regarding a carryall, but I wasn't sure if the same thing applies to a DS. My Club Car DS is gas and when attempting to shift into reverse it grinds terribly. I disconnected the shift cable and I can push it into reverse and if I hold it I can reverse fine. If I take pressure off the shift lever, it will grind again. I have read several times about a fix involving driving in forward and then slamming the cart into reverse. Is this something that would likely fix the issue I described or am I doomed to tear into the rearend to replace the syncros? Any help would be much appreciated!

Not sure how the CC ds is, is there cables that you can adjust to pull more tension going into reverse (like the ezgo) and slamming from drive to reverse or vise versa can not be good for anything. and do that a couple times and I'm almost sure your going to be tearing into that rear end.
