86 EZGO Fire Hazard
I am a newbie, my son and I bought this cart and was told all it needed was a battery. With a new Battery, the Choke cable gets REALLY hot but only when the switch is in either in Fwd or Revs. The starter never even tries to turn over. I checked the wiring against an 89 EZGO cart and everything matches. According to the tag it's an 86. I'm lost, any ideas?

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
Check your grounds. I would guess that a bad ground is causing current flow through the choke cable..

wow, that is a new one for me. choke cable heating up? should definitely be a ground issue!

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
to hasty with the submit button, you should have a bare silver cable coming off of the batt, and going to the engine, then piggybacked off of that is another that should be connected to the bottom mount of the starter. let us know what you find

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
My 86 has a bare cable attaching to the (-) of the battery, continuning to a frame bolt mount, and continues to an engine attachment point.
Definitely a bad ground to me! |

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
or the battery cable going to the FWD/REV switch is grounding out against the choke cable? Probably would smell smoke with that scenario though!

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
definitely clean all connections, that should cure your problem. also look for 'hot" wires that maybe rubbing against the frame

Re: 86 EZGO Fire Hazard
THANKS EVERYONE!!! You lead me in the right direction the piggyback cable from the switch to the bare cable had a break in it. You guys just made my day, I'm a newbie but definitely getting the fever. Now I just need to find some brushes for the starter and hope it starts.
