possible G1 questions
Hey guys I just got my hands on an older yamaha cart. I got a heck of a deal on it, heres what I got and my problems. There were two guys who owned it together who I bought it from one said it was an 84 the other said 85. Its a two stroke I know that much it was sitting except for being started every now and then to charge the battery for 2-3 years. It starts up and runs fine didn't have much power, though I put fresh 93 gas and some stabil in it, new plug blew out the airfilter, and tightened the governor screw all the way, I even took off the jam nut and tightened down even more. Now it seems to run pretty good not a rocket but fast enough I guess. Me and my wife just went for about a 1/2 mile ride and it seems to smoke a little bit. ( I know its suppose to smoke a little being a two stroke) When it comes to a steep hill it is a pig it slows to a crawl and on one hill in my yard it doesn't make it. smokes a lot and just bogs down and kinda stalls rolled it back down the hill and it made it to garage but even after I cut it off it had some smoke coming out of the exhaust, any Ideas where I should start, I don't wanna put a lot of money into this thing I only paid a 100 bucks for it. but I am really excited about a new toy to tinker with. If you only paid $100 for a running buggy, that is a steal. That leaves you plenty of room to throw some money at it without getting hurt. Try some cheap things first: take apart the clutches and clean and lubricate them, make sure they slide smoothly. Check the secondary clutch for worn out slider shoes and replace if needed. Check the width of the drive belt, new is 1 3/16, worn out is 1". If you need a new one, get a performance belt from Plowman's. Barbecue the muffler, maybe it is plugged up with old oil and carbon. Check the sticky at the top of the forum for info on this. Check your compression to be sure you have a healthy engine- should be over 100 PSI. If it had old gas in it, that should have been dumped out rather than mixed with fresh gas. If it has deteriorated (probably it has) the engine will not run well until it is gone. Take apart the carb and clean the passages and jets.
Those are the basics, low/no cost. Beyond that, you could install a torque spring, that will increase your low end climbing power, but may reduce your top speed. Let us know how you make out. |

Yeah I just read that thread. I may have a little fire tonight and see what that does. I'll check the belt to. I'm not to good with carburetors. But I may take it off and just spray some carb cleaner in it I'll have to do some research on how to check the clutches. The guys I got this thing from were in their late 80's. And bought it new. So I know it's never had a rough life. Just played golf with it once a week. There wasn't really enough gas in it to justify emptying the tank. Not sure how big the tank is but it took 5.5 gallons to fill it up. And I put a good bit of stabil ethanol treatment in it too.

Normally you can run the heck out of the cart and catch the oil in the muffler on fire, keep running it hard and it will stop after 10min or something and turn to blue smoke and its clear. Now these carts are getting so old the stuff dries up in there and sometimes will not burn out. But if it started to smoke a lot then its burning, that is good. Keep the gas on hard keep braking and flooring it. It can plug the exhaust up and take all the power away. Or you can put muffler in a fire and let it burn out. Golfing they take short drives muffler stays cold and collects oil. At a GC I had to run carts out all the time that got full, would fix the governor on and run it wide open down the back fairways and get them smoking like crazy, it was very funny back then. Some really make a cloud the kind that covers multiple houses next to the GC lol.
Then you need to check compression, air cleaner, plug, etc usual tune up. Do the clutches that helps. You can disable the governor on them and they will rev higher and go faster, long as no kids ride it. They go faster with a lift and big tires to gear them up that is why most put lifts on. Some carts you can get gears for the trans. |

I cut my 79 G-1 muffler open to have a look. It was not put together properly but I (in my humble opinion) do not think you could run this cart long enough to clog up the muffler. I straighten out the flanges on my muffler, welded the innards back together and put it back on the cart. Runs fine....

well I put my muffler in a fire tonight it burned out for a good hour or so. put it all back to gether and it ran about the same. I did notice it was way louder then I found out I forgot to put the little thing that screws into the bung on the exhaust. I put it back in and I adjusted the arm that goes to the carb ( made it a little longer so the carb would open all the way) now it doesnt really wanna run seems like its flooded I'll try it again in the morning and see what it does. I think my next step is trying to clean the carb, I'm not sure what intimidates me more the carb or the clutches. Any Ideas of where I can pick up an air filter without having to order it. the one in there had a pre filter which disentegrated when I took it out then I took my compressor and blew it out.

Look in the yellow pages for a local golf cart company. But when I ordered my filter from Buggies Unlimited it was at my door in two days. Sounds like you got a deal. I'd definately suggest checking the compression. These two strokes eat rings and it's not hard or expensive to replace them. I would suggest a repair manual also. Good luck!

The muffler has some packing in there right? They collect oil because of golf use. If you run them on the trail they will never plug as the muffler gets hot and cleans itself.
There is a dealer here sometimes they are cheaper than internet, Boylan sales, they will mail stuff to me but not sure about out of state. Cart parts plus and TNT golf are others I've bought from, and BU but not lately. Some of the stuff is on ebay as well. Check out any sponsors for this site I try to support them for the site! That muffler in photos looks real clean. They do get quiet when plugged, I've had carts that were plugged in the outlet pipe. Stuck something up there and it ran again but know it was full inside. If you mess with the throttle make sure it is closed when the pedal hits the start switch. G1 is supposed to idle when the pedal is just on enough to run, they start much better that way too. Top of pedal should move about an inch at idle before carb opens and it takes off. Idle is just faster than generator, pretty slow idle, should be missing on little rich mixture. |

Well I did my compression test and it was 100-105 in forward and 115-120 in reverse. I think Thats pretty good tell me if I'm wrong, I'm guessing my next step should be the carb. maybe. Any input and advice is appreciated thanks for all the help so far.
