Default Can spring brake cables be used on non spring brake cables?

Like the title said, I have a 1983 Marathon (electric) with non-spring brake cables (part #s 19038-G1 left side and 19038-G2 right side) and wanted to "upgrade" to either the small spring or large spring brake cables.

The lengths seem to be nearly the same, just the cable casing ends may be too big by the drums?

Anyone done this before?

My thinking is the springs would help release the brakes and eliminate the brake dragging I have now.

Thanks in advance from this "newbie"...
