Default Notches in differential housing (G8E)

Looking at the mating surface for the motor from the passenger side rear tire there are two notches, at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions. With the motor installed i would think it leaves access to water/dirt. They are about 1/4” deep and triangular. They do not look broken but cast in. Any ideas? I’d rather they were not there.

My G8E didn’t have any such notches. Could you upload a picture?

I can this evening. It almost looks like access to pry on the motor but they’re not rough looking holes.

I had my son send some pics. These are definitely not supposed to be there. What do you think, fill with JB weld?

That looks broken to me... hard to believe those would be there originally.
