18 is small and a 20amp fuse will make it burn like a dynomite fuse if it shorts.

I did meantion I'm electrical illiterate didn't I?

So to be safe and have no problems later should I go buy some different wire and re-wire it again?

I hate to say that and make you rewire but 18 on a 20 amp is light.

Electric is easy if you think its just like water, if there is a pipe in there is a pipe out.

You shouldn't need more than a 10 amp fuse. Dooms is right though, 18 is too light. Look at the chart at the bottom of that diagram, it will tell you what guage to run. That shoud fix your problem the correct way.
