Cleaning a crankshaft with acid
Ruredy had posted about 2 years ago about using muratic acid to clean off the old aluminum on a crankshaft. Can anyone tell me more. Do I brush it on or do I soak the shaft in it? The engine was run low on oil and it throw a rod. Just tring to save a crankshaft.

Re: Cleaning a crankshaft with acid
Yep, muriatic acid and a green scotchbrite pad will remove any aluminum residue. Might take a few applications and as long as you're still seeing black, you're removing aluminum. Had to do banshee cranks a time or two. Be sure to use those big yellow rubber gloves to protect your hands.
