But all have there own ignition systems. Can't switch, so you have to keep the 8 TCI. , and possibly flywheel.

Hey I gues I'll chime in on what I lnow first. Welsome Red and congrats on the G8 They are a great cart!!!!!!
As far as getting the most bang for your buck on the G8 this is what I have found so far.
The power spring on the secondary is the first upgrad but if you put the new style helix, a machined sheave and a HD belt you will get more power earlier in the power band which is great for trails. Mine feels like it will climb anything.
Most here have bypassed the governor and have run the throttle straight to the carb to gain the most topspeed out of the motor. I took smallblocks advise and went with the speed spring on the governor. It wont get you the top speed that bypassing will but you still get full use of the governor and dont have to worry about over reving and blowing the motor up. Mine does 26 mph on gps.
If you do decide to go with the K&N filter you will have to rejet the carb. And probably go with the performance exaust. Most say that there is minimal gains with this upgrade and it will make the cart louder. I haven't done this upgrade because I plan on taking my G8 into campgrounds that have a no gas cart policy and need to keep mine as quiet as can be.
Check out the G8 club for alot of info on these upgrades. You will have to go through some BS but that is only because we like to have alot of fun.

BigRed there is plenty of power to gain with the clutching, some with rejet and exhaust, but remember what size engine your starting with
As Caj said bypassing the governor helps, but with risks. I have taken mine where a Cart should not go. Engine alignment so that the belt has good tension is a great torgue add and so are Good engine mounts (keeps the engine from moving under load)

G2s and G9s do share some things with G8s --- but Yamaha soon saw their mistake and quit making the 8s (hence their rarity!). What they have is "different", though not as good as a '40 Ford coup or Hummer.

There is a bit of friendly "rivalry" between the G8s and and their superior "brothers", the 2s and 9s, but I refuse to participate in that childishness.

Have fun with your cart, and understand that any YAMAHA is better than any other brand.
