Engine speed rhythmically up and down
Hi: 2007 Club car only starts by folloring
gas pedal and stalls without keeping the gas pedal down. While it runs the speed goes up and then down with a regular rhythm. I can see what I assume is the accelarator cable moving back and forth to the beat of the engine speed where it enters an apparatus near the top on the engine but the gas pedal is stationary. Thanks |

Re: Engine speed rhythmically up and down
I'm assuming you are either in maintenance mode or you have the rear wheels off the ground since you are standing there watching the linkage move.
When you floor it in either maintenance mode or with the tires off the ground the cart, since it has no resistance against it, will build RPM's and tire speed quickly and the govenor will kick in. When the govenor kicks in the speed will decrease for moment and then (since you are still holding it floored) it will quickly build back up and again hit the govenor and slow back down. That cycle will repeat as long as you hold the pedal down. The linkages you are watching move are likely the throttle cables to and from the govenor assembly as well as the govenor assembly itself. The govenor is designed to reduce the throttle input received at the motor regardless of what is going on at the pedal so the cart will slow down. It does that via a linkage and spring which are mounted on the transaxle in the rear of the cart. The throttle cable doesn't go straight from the pedal to the carb as it would on car. It instead goes to the govenor set up before going to the motor. Becuase of the way the govenor is designed it can increase or decrease the throttle level the motor receives regardless of the fact that you have the pedal to the floor. |

Re: Engine speed rhythmically up and down
How do you change between Maintenance and normal run modes?
My Newly acquired used Gas Club car is doing exactly this and I was told by the previous owner that the car had been recently and fully serviced. It starts easy runs well just seems very slow and rhythmic at the top end with speed maxing out then slowing and again maxing out. Could the service tech have left it in maintenance mode? |

Re: Engine speed rhythmically up and down
Perc, your problem with having to floor it may be the inlet needle in the carb may be sticking and allowing to much gas, therefore you have to floor it.

Re: Engine speed rhythmically up and down
Thank you shoelessjoe and DOOmsman:
Looks like a sticky inlet needle might be the cause of having to floor the pedal to start the cart and keep it going which then kicks the govenor in resulting in the engine speed going up and down. Looking at the schematic of the fuel system for new models up to 2005 the carb looks like the one in my 2007 with the needle accessible in the bowl at the bottom of the carb. I hesitate to take the carb apart. Looks like a O-ring at the seat of the bowl which will crumble when I try to take the bowl off which I'm not sure I can do without removing the whole carb from the engine with gaskets breaking and microscopic parts falling out etc.. Is there a repair kit? The cart spent the winter here in NY in a heated garage without any storage steps being carried out. Thanks again |
