cart won't start
I have a 1988 Gas Club Car. Had problems with it starting so purchased a new starter/generator. It still will not start. I have tried to trace out the problems and so far everything is grounded as far as I know. I didn't take it down, my father in law did so I don't know if I'm missing something or not. Not sure if it is the solenoid or have a bad connection or what could be not letting it start. When we hold down the gas pedal it just turns but will not engage. What am I missing or what do we need to do next...Thanks

Re: cart won't start
Take the spark plug out. Is it wet on the plug and in the chamber after you try to start it? If it's dry then you have a fuel issue. If it's wet you probably have a spark issue.
If it's wet (which means you have fuel), hold the spark plug with some insulated pliers up against the motor body to ground it. Push the pedal, you should hear the plug clicking and see it sparking. |

Having similar problem with my 89. What's the next step if no spark?

Re: cart won't start
Try a new plug (part of a tune up anyway). If that's not it make sure all your wires are connected. Still no spark? Could be your coil.

Re: cart won't start
Appears to be the coil. This seems like a diificult part to find! Were there diffences with the 89 as I see some earlier and most later. Are there other options for using a different coil?
Thanks |

Re: cart won't start
Yeah they're kind of hard to find and I don't know what the difference would be between an '89-'91 coil and an '84-'88 coil. But according to the listings I see they make it sound like they changed something in '89 or '90 but I have no idea what. Been wondering this for awhile but nobody seems to know.

Re: cart won't start
Here's a listing on eBay for the coil that I see all the time, the coil that is said to only fit the 1990-1991 carts. I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work on pre-1990 cart. All gas Club Cars from 1984-1991 have the same motor. dmandrus you should buy it and tell us if it works.

Re: cart won't start
Bought a used coil from a guy nearby and put it on, still no spark. I tested the hot wire going to the coil (a three prong-unit) and it barely lit up the voltage tester. I am wondering if the coil is not getting enough juice. Also I just replaced the battery last week, originally thinking that was the problem.
Where does the coil get its power from? So far I have replaced all four micro switches, the fuel pump (and filters), spark plug, air filter, solenoid, battery, and now the coil. She will turn over, but not start. Thanks |

Re: cart won't start
It could be your exciting coil setup. It's mounted behind the flywheel on the driver's side of the motor. Here's a pic of it and link to one that's for sale. Unless you can get one from the same guy you got the ignition coil from.
