There are controllers in the Market that can do regen with Series motors, like the Kelly controller KDZ48401 for example. The cool thing is that they use a 0-5v type input for the brake regen so you can control it from coast to a full regen brake. yea the golf cart world is a small part of the controller market.
This is talked about in series motors when you research on series controllers and motors. Also running a running SEPEX motor with a series controller with a POT this is the way large conveyor systems used to work.

What kind of conveyor are we talking here?

That’s what I do or did, I was an engineer for a couple of conveyor companies starting back in 1983, I was asked to come out of retirement this past May for a conveyor job at the local Ford Claycomo plant that I am working on now.

Before being an engineer, I was an electrician at both of the local GM plants. I worked quite a bit in the control rooms where the drive and control panels are located. I’ve never seen a conveyor drive motor run in series. Most of the DC drive motors I have seen were compound wound motors with both a series field winding and a shunt or separately excited field winding. This may be where the confusion came about.

Before that, I was an electrician for a railroad. Road diesels indeed start with the field and armature in series. At about 19 MPH there is a transition from series to parallel for speed.

You may be able to run a sepex motor in series but I don’t see getting enough armature voltage to get any speed out of it.

The Sepex field has too much resistance to run in series with the Armature. IT's designed to see full battery voltage. It will not work in series.

Sepex motor can run from a series controller armature only, field runs with a large pot or variac. I don't think I said runs in series.

conveyors like large mines used sepex motor setup for speed control with above pots and usually once set was left alone.
