Default What is this piece on my Melex?

Newbie to the forum and to the whole golf cart world. I just purchased a mid 90's Melex 512E and saw this piece of metal hanging down. Can anyone explain what this is? It's obviously part of the shackle that holds the leaf springs together, but what is the pointy part sticking down? Looks almost like some sort of hitch or something.

Thats exactly what it is. Kingpin, you can take it off if you don't want it.

That was funny Scotty! I assumed that it was some sort of kingpin. Now was that used just to transport the carts on the semi trailer as it goes down the freeway, or is there any reason to link carts together on the ground? Just wondering.

I have no plans to take it off, my motto, if it isn't hurting anything, might as well just leave it. Maybe I'll chrome it

Carts at a club get left all over the grounds by thoughtless republicans. The cart shack needs to collect them each night for service. They would go around with a high torque drag vehicle, hook the carts together, and drag the whole train back at once.

....or the charging barn is off premise some distance from the clubhouse or pro shop. Then they gather them up and train 'em over.

"Back in the day" we never used a "high torque drag vehicle." We just used one of the stock carts or even two if the train was over 4 carts. Can you say "centipede?" and stopping, well who needs to stop right? Let's just say the R panel siding on the charging barn was "experienced."
