Default Starter brush worn?

I have been having a slow starts the first time I start everyday now no start at all. I popped brush out to look... seems good still. Wasn't much spring tension on it if any. Yeah I have some troubleshooting to do... Some of you been through this. You guys just put a little more spring tension on it and clean everything up and put it back together? Can I test it by just running a hot wire to the proper terminal? It may also be a bad solenoid... I don't hear a click.

Hard to tell from the pic, but it doesn't look like there is much meat left. Can you get a pic from the side? The black "brush" should be maybe an inch long roughly.

I've done it both ways (replacing just the brushes) & Replacing the complete brush and plate assembly which was easer because the little screws holding the brushes are always a job to free up. Just saying

If you are not hearing a click, you need to go further back into the start circuit. It is not the starter. It sounds like a solenoid or the switch under the floor not making contact. Yes, you should be able to apply power to solenoid to get the starter to kick in.

I hear a click when I step on the gas pedal... but no click when I turn the ignition switch on.

Clean both grounds well as if you have a good frame ground but bad engine ground you will have funny starting problems.

It turns out the brushes are not worn out... just one of them hanging up where the lead should move through the slot in the holder, it wasn't.

Sometimes with the brushes are a little oversize they can be sanded to make some clearance in the holder
