Cleaning my engine.
I want to clean my engine and paint it while I have it apart but I am not sure what the best way to go about it is. Can I use some sort of degreaser and a pressure washer? I'm just a little afraid of using water while I have it taken apart.

Re: Cleaning my engine.
Mineral spirits and a small brass brush do wonders.

I did mine recently with engine degreaser and a parts cleaner brush Plus hot water from the water heater. I also scraped the heavy stuff with the putty knife. I use the pressure washer on it to get the final little debris off of everything

Re: Cleaning my engine.
I scrape all the heavy stuff, then spray it with brake-clean,and follow with a blow-gun on my compressor. It strips the grease and leaves a clean bare surface.Soak an area, and blast it with air.It works awesome and doesn't really make much mess if are careful with the air.A little cat-litter under the cart speeds cleanup after. Hope this helps.

Brake-Clean, Steel Wool, Wire Brush. I just cleaned mine got overly enthusiastic and bead blasted everything. I would strongly discourage that spent more time cleaning out the media than I would have just using brake-clean.

Re: Cleaning my engine.
Bead blasting is not recommended on an assembled engine, the media can find ways into places and cause damage.I would pull the flywheel and check behind it for residue, also disassemble the clutch if it has any openings at all.

Re: Cleaning my engine.
Like mentioned above brake cleaner is gonna get most all the heavy grime off without scrubbing. Just buy several cans because it runs out fast.

This is the result of cleaning with mineral spirits.

Re: Cleaning my engine.
marathon, thats too organized! By the way, if you use the plastic tube on your brake clean it will last almost twice as long
