battery storage
I store my cart from May until November. What should I do with the batteries while cart is stored?
I sure appreciate this forum and the advice I get. Thanks to all who provide answers for the less knowledgeable. Chuck B |

Re: battery storage
You need to somehow keep them charged or they will be junk when you get back. I have my house watcher charge my cart periodically. If you have access to AC, you can buy a battery tender that keeps them trickle charged. Worth the $$ in battery savings. I use them on my cars that I leave unattended. I leave a car in Colorado when I am in Arizona and I leave one in Arizona when I am in Colorado for the summer. I have a battery tender for each one of them.

Re: battery storage
I could be wrong... but if you have a 48v cart, I am told all the 48v chargers have a "charged/cut off". We have a cart we keep plugged in 100% of the time and which gets very, very light use. Our last set of (Trojan) batteries lasted 8 years.

Re: battery storage
Most chargers do NOT cycle back on after finishing a charge. They have to be unplugged and replugged to start charging again.

Re: battery storage
I use one of these...http://www.saveabattery.com/ . Can leave it plugged in all year long. Not affected by power failuries. will restart after when power returns. puts out 2 amps, batteries will not use water during charge. Worth the the cost to sav a pack. Shop around, prices vary.

Re: battery storage
IMHO you need a real Cart charger, not a trickled charger nor a low output battery "tender". I use tenders on my cars and motorcycles, especially when wife and I go away for the summer. But with the 48v cart, I want something that puts out more than 2amp. 13 amp is about right for 48v. Also, when we return we do not find any "water loss" in the batteries. Plus... the plug directly fits the cart.
Like I said, the last "pack" we had lasted 8 years. |

Re: battery storage
2 amps is plenty to keep your cart batteries topped up if they are fully charged when you put the tender on.

Re: battery storage
And for charging a battery the rule is C/10. So for a 170 Ah pack you need a 17 amp charger for a 150 Ah you need a 15 amp charger. Of course this is optimum conditions. I've also tried to measure the float current with my DPI. Nothing registers with my clamp on ammeter so I'm assuming it was in the low ma's. I wasn't that interested to find out for sure.
