Bill, that's exactly why so many people (like myself) won't fool with the 2 strokes. You could maybe find a 3pg engine for it (I believe that's the correct engine for an 87) or install some other engine. stick a sled engine in it, those engines are cheap off of ebay and very powerful. So what if you don't have reverse, it wouldn't be hard at all to spin the cart around with a 40hp sled engine.

LOOKS TO ME BY THE PIC OF THE MOTOR MOUNTS AND THE MUFFLER,
BATTERY TRAY THAT THE CART IS NOT A 87.
I WOULD GUESS A PRE 80'S.
SO WHATS WRONG WITH THE MOTOR?
THERE VERY EASY TO REBUILD.(I REBUILT MY 76') AND ITS FAST ENOUGH TO THROW THE WIFE OUT

GOOD LUCK, DEW

p.s. if you dont want the motor i'll take it.

I am pretty sure it is a 87.I can see where the original motor mounts and battery tray where welded in.The gas tank has also been relocated. Are the parts still available for this motor?Where would you suggest i look for parts. It definetly needs a top end.

you can get almost all the parts(no crank shaft or strarter/gen.)
i got my parts from golfcarcatalog.com (not a sponsor; sorry!)
they have lots of the old ezgo stuff and are easy to work with to.

rebuild the top end(or maybe just new rings? )
buy new points & condenser, new brushes. set the points at .015
clean every thing very well !! she'll run fine.

when i rebuilt mine the only problem i've had with mine is about 4 months of abuse it started to run very rough (back firing , no power ,etc., etc.)
i was told to replace the condenser by a fella on here(dont remember his name) so i put the original back on and it runs great.
just something to look for (DONT THROW THE ORIGINAL PARTS AWAY)

GOOD LUCK, dew

Well i went ahead on rebuilt the motor.Got it back together and in the cart and it fired right up ONCE.Now it wont turn over,The solinoid clicks but thats it.I can manualy turn the motor over and the starter will engage once in a while. How screwed am i now since starter parrts are not available for this old 76.Maybe it just needs brushes??

Also i noticed the clutch didnt open up,Could it just be stuck from sitting for a long time (maybe years)?

Just another thought.Since these have a electric starter built into the motor what tells the starter that the motor is running so that the starter doesnt continue to run? I ask this because when i got the cart it was missing the key and some of the wiring had been takin apart so i "hot wired" but a couple of the wires i wasnt sure about. Either way that doesnt answer the problem that it turned over and now it dont.

Figured it out.Whn i put the motor back in i missed the ground strap to the motor. The only thing left that i need before a test run is a belt.I undercoated the complete engine bay and undercarrage. I also stripped off all the old paint and bondo'd up the dings and dents.Plan on just rattle can for paint.
This was supposed to be a cheap project but i know how that goes.
