Default 12 volt battery question

A buddy of mine is upgrading a backup power source at his job and he replacing about 100 12volt deep cycle batteries, some of which are only a couple of months old. My question is can I use 8 12volt batteries rigging 2 in parrallel making 4 sources of 12 volts totaling 48volts? They are gell cell batteries an I really hate for them to go to waste. I have an 01 EZ-GO with a 502-1 motor and a alltrax controller. It's rigged for 36 volts, but I was planning to go to 48 volts anyway

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow..I would love to have access to batteries like that !! In theory yes. What is the amp hour rating on the batteries ? Why not go to 72v or 96v if ya gonna upgrade. My next project is gonna be that..as soon as the wife lets me get anther project car :-). Check over or post over at extreme DC thread. chances are someone has done something like you want.

I have a setup that can go up to 48 volt. I know I will have to upgrade my charger. Will a 48 volt charger work on that system?

If you go forward with this a common golf cart charger is not correct for that battery type.

A charger that is optimized for gell cell batteries. Your typical transformer charger will destroy those cells OR not bring them up to spec properly. Either way, it would need to be replaced.

I did a quick search and found this. I am sure there are others. Just search. Sounds like a fun project.

I have a 36 volt charger for my current system. Just out of curiosity... If I sell it, what should I ask for it? It's a power wiz charger that came with my ezgo cart

Before you start shopping for an appropriate charger, post some specs on these free batteries. They may be totally inappropriate for a cart.

The batteries are out of a UPS system. They are the correct size. They are Gell Cell 400 amp batteries. That's all I know. Is there anything else I should check on?
