Default Steering column messed up?

I was cleaning the cart after reassembly and stereo install a couple weeks ago and decided I wanted to straighten the steering wheel. There is a little play in it, nothing too bad, but is not straight when driving straight (previous owner lifted the cart). After I got the nut off of the wheel, I tried to pull the steering wheel off. Well no go, and I was not in the mood to break something and decided I would deal with it another day. When i went to put all the covers back on, I realized that the shaft had moved about an inch toward the driver. Now if straight the column is inserted to "proper depth" or maybe an inch in too far, but if you turn to the right, it seems to come toward you that inch. Everything still works fine, except the staft is moving toward you. I have not run across this before, and was not planning to replace the whole steering set up at this point, but if I messed it up, then that may have moved up on the priority list. Should i give it a little love tap to reseat it? I did tap it with a hammer to try and get it off, but it did not even budge so thoughts are welcome to get the wheel off. Or I will tackle that another day.

Hope that makes sense.

Well possible, but it is the interior shaft that is moving, if that makes sense. I don't know where it actually inserts other than throught he outer column into th actual steering box. I jsut don't want to break down the entire thing if there is something that I am just missing easily.
