You don't have to have, but you should have.

The resistor reduces the pitting on the solenoid's contacts and the diode reduces pitting on the pedal switch contacts, prolonging their useful lives.

For a 36V system the resistor should be about 250 Ohms with a 10 Watt power rating.
The diode should be about 3A with a 100V or higher rating.

A2 terminal was eliminated not too many years after solid state speed control introduction. Engineers found most controller failure was related to the heat caused by dumping excess amperage into the controller via A2 terminal

How do you determine where the A terminal is on the F&R switch is located on a 2000 txt series cart with the switch installed on the cart?

As shown on the schematic I attached to my post#3, A is on bottom.
