1984 club car - no reverse
I just purchased a used GAS 1984 Club Car that the seller was truthful in telling me it had No reverse. I test drove it and forward was fine. Banged on the shift lever on the trans and reverse worked. Got it home and noticed the forward/reverse shift cable was froze. Replaced the shift cable, microswitch, and I still can't get it to go in reverse. Manual with cable disconnected or otherwise. Forward is fine. I read in another post that going very fast in the gear you have , then dropping it in the other may free it up, but I don't want to damage it further. Any suggestions as to other things I may look at? Thanks in advance.

Re: 1984 club car - no reverse
OK. I messed around with the cart a bit this AM. It will go in forward, but I have to hold the shift lever to forward to keep it from jumping out. Messed with it a little more and got it to go into reverse, staying in reverse, but then it wouldn't go back into forward. Messed with it again and got it to go back into forward and no reverse. What can I else can I check.? I don't think this is internal. Maybe I'm wrong.

Sounds internal to me.I also have a 84 and it shifts very easy. With the shift cable disconnected you should be able to feel it engage fully in both forward and reverse. That's working it by hand of course.

Re: 1984 club car - no reverse
Thanks Brad. That may be the case. I am going to remove the shift lever from the top of the gear case tomorrow. I am thinking that maybe the "woodruff key" that moves shifter shaft may be broken. I assume that this shaft can be just tapped out....Yes / No?

Re: 1984 club car - no reverse
After taking it to a golf cart repair place...they say it is internal and want to replace the whole transmission. Is this the way to go or are they just taking the easy way out by not taking it apart and maybe finding some small broken part?

Re: 1984 club car - no reverse
Friend of mine fixed one of those said it was a plastic gear that needed replacing but, they had the thing apart 3 times before they got it right .... he said never again.
Maybe CC tech TDawg can lend some insight? |

Three times????? Man, can't afford that. Waiting to see what the estimate is. I may just leave it stuck in forward and tear it apart myself this winter.

Pulling the transmission / differential and sending it to have rebuilt. Less than $500.
