Default more speed without sacrificing low speed control

Thanks Crash, for your help so far.

I took off the governor guard and the intake pipe and the air intake hose so that I could use a mirror and look into the carb at the throttle plate. The throttle plate was not closing all of the way and that is why I did not have low speed control with the go peddle. I adjusted the accelerator cable at the black box so that the throttle plate would open just after the micro switch would click. However, since I had a wire tie on the governor arm about the transmission, the throttle plate would not close because the governor arm was holding it a touch open. That is why I did not have low speed control - the wire tie was preventing the throttle plate from closing, and therefore I had no low speed control with the foot peddle.

I took off the wire tie from the governor and set about adjusting the accelerator cable. The adjustment at the black box took a little bit of effort to find the spot where the throttle plate just opened after the micro switch clicked, and after the go peddle was released have the throttle plate close completely. A test drive revealed that indeed I had good low speed control, but my top speed was back down to 14 mph, instead of 17 with the wire tie.

My question is: using the wire tie trick, do all carts lose low speed control with the go peddle? If so, how does one increase the speed of the cart without losing low speed control.

I do not have an adjustment 10mm nut at the rear end of my accelerator cable. I am almost of the opinion that I will need to adjust the governor at the transaxle to get both higher speed and low speed control.

Ideas?

Best,
Jim

Hey Jim,
Try 2 ot the smallest zip ties you can find (mine were from a set of rope lights)
put them together end to end, pinch them between the cable ball and spring,
and leave a little loose for your low end crusing speed!

Thanks Lockman,

I tried the zip ties on the accelerator spring but I was still bumping up against the governor, which limited my RPMs. So I loosened the 10 mm nut on the governor and took it out of the equation, but then I had no control over low speed with the foot peddle and the RPM limiter was cutting off and on at about a 1/2 peddle press. So I adjusted the accelerator cable so that all the threads were showing inside the black box - which resulted in better low speed control, but still limiting out before the peddle hit the floor.

Next I took off the bronze rod that connects to the foot pedal and made it as short as the threads would allow me to do it. This resulted in very good low speed control, but a rode test resulted in a top speed of 19 mph by GPS with the peddle all of the way down, and sometimes it would just hit the limiter. Because I was out of adjustments (the rod was as short as I could make it, and all of the threads were inside of the black box), I disconnected the ground wire from the limiter. Now my top speed is about 20 MPH and a comfortable cruising speed is about 16 to 17 MPH. I need to get a tach and find out what my RPMs are doing.

As far as I know the cart is all stock, with no lift kit and 8.5 inch tires. When in maintenance mode the belt on the drive clutch travels to about 1/2 inch from the top.

Question - is the 1/2 inch on the clutch preventing a 16 to 17 MPH cruising speed from happening at lower RPMs?

Best,
Jim

That's as far closed as the drive clutch gets!
If you notice in maintenance mode... your drive clutch will get to that point,
before full throttle, then the engine rev gains you the extra speed!

If you feel you want to do something different, Tom at Carts Parts Plus
may be able to machine your drive clutch, and add a different spring
to get better speed with less RPM's! (but it will sacrifice some torque!)

1st question: what year cart are you working on ?
2nd question: how old is the belt ?

that wire tie crap is for people that can't adjust
things properly.

Thanks Lockman,

When I get my tach I will report GPS speed vs RPMs. For now I am very happy with the performance as long as I am not red-lining it. I don't really want to go faster than 17 mph or so, but will appreciate the extra speed in certain situations.

Best,
Jim

My club car is a 1997 with a FE 290 motor. I don't know how old the belt is but seems in pretty good condition. How old does a belt have to get to effect the performance?

Would you care to explain yourself? Or are we to assume you are just another ash-hole with 9 posts who knows it all?
