1989 marathon project
i just bought a 1989 marathon it has a 4" lift and a 2000 kawasaki fe290D eng. i could you some help with the following.
1. the eng is mounted to a plate welded to the rear swing arm no rubber mounts, is this going to be a problem? 2. the starter is wired straight from battery through a key switch and push button start, the problem is the key does not shut off the eng. is there a way to hook up a kill switch? 3. there is no voltage reg or solenoid and i would like to run lights and a stereo. do i need these two item to do that and how do you run the wiring for it? 4. this may sound stupid so forgive me. how does the battery charge it's self or not drain down while operating the lights and stereo? 5. there are 2 green wires and 1 black wire coming from the engine not conected to anything does anyone have a clue what these do? i know i have alot of question for one post but any help would be appreciated, i have been given wiring manuals, but they look latin to me as i have a different eng than is in a normal marathon thanks |

Re: 1989 marathon project
Well I can't delve too deeply into your electrical questions but perhaps this will help others, it's the wiring schematic for the engine you have ...
If you want the full manual in .pdf, it's available here: http://forums.cartpartsplus.com/imag.../fe290-400.pdf The solid mount shouldn't be a problem except that it will transfer more engine vibration to the cart, on the upside though as the stock rubber mounts wear out they can cause belt and clutch issues so you've eliminated that possibility with the hard mount. As to charging, again that's for someone a bit more savvy - hope this diagram helps! |

Re: 1989 marathon project
If you're talking about the molded rubber rear wheel flares, yes, those from an 89 are the same as the 88's

Re: 1989 marathon project
Here is a couple pictures of the cart. So far the body is off the cart so we can get the painting done sometime this week! The other pictures are of the engine. If anyone knows what the green wires and black wires are for or what they go to that would be helpful! Thanks guys

Re: 1989 marathon project
the pictures you see of the engine are after cleaning and paint, i will have my son post some of the before pictures of what we started with. i bought this cart for $600 the owner said it started but wouldnt run. i took the engine out cleaned and alittle lube on the clutch and presto it ran very well. i'm still trying to figue out the wiring but the advise has been great. i should have it painted and back together in 2wks. i have one more question it has a straight pipe coming off the eng (very loud) i read on another post i could fabricate a pipe with an motorcycle exhaust on it does it matter what type or size of the exhaust? or will any do? thanks for the help.
