Default OK I am being lazy- A buddy said he would help me pull the motor

I have the 2008 48 volt Bad Boy/EZGO buggy and something in the front is locked up-

A buddy said since my Son is working 10 to 12 hours days, he could help me figure it out

While we were talking, He asked how many bolts hold a motor in, and if we could let the motor hang while we tested it out

If the motor spins, its probably the Front differential, if it doesn't it the motor

I thought there are 3 to four bolts that hold the motor in?

would it be ok to hit the accelerator pedal with the motor hanging?

thanks
CSports

PS- My Son and Daughter in Law are saving for a home, so I won't give him grief for working so much

Oh hell no. There is a tremendous amount of torque generated by these motors. Plus the front end of the shaft has no support when uninstalled. Don't try it. Do the motor test with the motor bolted up in the cart and the rear wheel off.

If you want to check the front end. Unbolt the motor ( do not run the motor when it is unbolted from the axle.) When the motor is unbolted from the axle try to turn the input shaft and see if the front end turns, Like Scottyb said you can not run the motor when it is not bolted to the axle

Well csport you are from the show me state.. If you fire that motor up unattached there would be some definite show me things going on..

Like was suggested. Put cart in Tow.. Disconnect a battery main. Jack up the front end, unbolt the motor from the diff case and slide apart. See if you can spin the front axle using the input shaft. If yes then try spinning the motor or look for bad things in the motor..

If the front doesn't spin, it is time to start pulling things apart..

this cart has the foward and reverse switch in the dash, has a controllerand solenoid, but no run tow switch

it is 4 wheel drive- two motors, one front one rear ( rear is like normal cart)

I should be hoping for a differential problem and not a motor

Hate to see anybody hurt.
Back in the early days the MODS censored my posts quite regularly

Dont jump to conclusions, it may be cheaper to get a motor rebuilt than getting parts for that front axle. But we still gotta get to the root of the problem. Either way, follow scottyb's advice on the "not powering up motor not attached to axle" thing. In my experience, applying 12v to motor out of the cart just made the armature stick to a field shoe, and did nothing to help me diagnose anything. I usually use a cheapo 12v jumpstart box for motor testing, it doesnt really deliver enough amps for a scary surprise on a bad motor, but enough to turn a good motor.
