Lester charger
Can I use this on my 1990 EZGO? Both 36 volt. I'd have to change the plug. I know it works. Is it worth messing with?

Re: Lester charger
Yes you can, be sure to check your water levels often, at 30a max she's a bear of a charger.

Re: Lester charger
Yep, that charger is a beast! I have an (even older) green one of those. It will work with a plug change, but it's "timer only" control system has pretty much put it in the history books

Re: Lester charger
The guy that gave it to me said it turns off when its done. I dont see how.It does have a timer on it, like an egg timer for my stove. I dont really need it, just hated to see it go in the trash. I may need a spare one day

Re: Lester charger
Since it can be manually turned on & off, I find it highly useful for "jumpstarting" packs that are too low for automatic chargers to catch. That model will turn off "when it's done", yep, when the timer runs out. The ones that use the timer and a sensor board to also turn off can be distinguished by a timer knob & numbers that go the other direction. They are slightly different shaped, I call them "tombstone chargers" and they don't use the screw-base fuses.

Re: Lester charger
That charger and it's clones are turned on and off by an electromechanical timer, but they don't pump out their maximum amps during the entire time they are turned on.
In their 36V configuration, they pump out their max amps until the battery pack's On-Charge voltage climbs to about 40V and then their amp output start to decrease as the On-Charge voltage increases. By the time the On-Charge voltage climbs into the 45V to 50V range, the amps have decreased to something in the 2A to 8A range, so they effectively become something akin to a trickle charger during the later part of the 12 hours the timer has them turned on for. I'm not sure which came first, the chicken or the egg, but Trojan's recommended charge profile (attached) matches the voltage and amperage characteristics of a ferroresonant transformer type charger, such as the Lester-Matic. |
