You can't get any better advice than you got from ScottyB, Sergio and NoleFan who responded, pay attention to them and not the 'old' directions.

We feel your pain ELECTNUT; you hear pre-charge resistor, regen diode, spark arresting diode, etc. and it all gets a little confusing, especially when you are not use to it AND you have ~$500 and all your time wrapped up into that controller that you do NOT want to make a mistake and burn up.

It looks like yours had a precharge resistor on the big posts and a diode on the small posts, which were all what you would have on there in '16 when you installed a new controller to an established 400a solenoid. Unless I overlooked it, no one said remove the diode from the small posts, you were just not sure. So just toss off the pre-charge resistor from the large posts and replace it with the regen diode to protect it. (And I am assuming, just as you are, that your earlier model still needs the spark arresting diode on the small posts - and to my knowledge, it will not hurt anything if it is redundant, but the regen diode needs to be added to the big posts to protect your investment)
