Well I figured as much the thread would go this route, you're right the charger doesn't need to know how much was used to charge the batteries, they do quite well these days and I bet the OBC compared to the smart charger, the charger is more cost effective.
I think that there are still some good information from the OBC that was never taken advantage of and it could of been improved also to stay with the times even though it was improved some probably not enough and wasn't going to be cost effective either in the long run. I do see potential with measuring the amperage like providing a more precise usage to calculate the charging as a pack, also It could of provided live data to the user like when we add a voltmeter, it would be an ammeter and use that in a formulated way to gauge how much you have left before requiring a charge, also help identify when the batteries aren't holding the charge as before ie. weak cell etc.
The down side is when someone wants to upgrade, the pass through is limiting unless you modify, like a stud. Also another point of failure and costly, the modern controllers simplify the system so much that is a big trouble shooting savings and less to go wrong.
