Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
Take the clutch cover off, look for one of the 3 weights to be loose or out of place. The sheave should slide smooth and free along the shaft. Slight amount of wobble. Compare between your good one and the new one. Same with secondary sheave, compare with your good one.

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
If you have the G9 model clutch, it has 3 weights that move on 3 arms. If one breaks then you have two, you lost 33% of the force that closes the clutch with increased rpm....so it has a hard time closing and the engine revs more to make it close. If nothing gets stuck in there from being broken, this happens with many different types of weight style clutches. Last time I looked the weight and arm were around 35 each and you need 3 of them, though they don't go out very often. Not sure on that price I ended up getting a used one to repair a broken one for a friend because it needed more parts than just the weights.

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
its got a comet clutch on it and cant figure out how to see if the weights are in one piece. going to see if i can borrow a clutch puller and swap the clutches and see what that does. also the noise is coming from the driven sheave

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
The driven only has a center bushing and the pucks the ramps ride on in the back side. You can see if the pucks beak or wear off, the bushing you just grab the moving sheave and twist/push it in a little then you can rock it side to side and check for play. They have a little play, but if they get real loose they will start to wobble and make noises in use. Note the driven/secondary rotates via cart speed, if it makes noises it would change with speed not engine rpm like the primary does.
Also check the clutch sheaves for holes, the aluminum parts will wear holes in them after many years from dust/dirt in the belt. There has to be a thread on the 94 and servicing it, check the big block section. I have not worked on one in so long I forget. You can changed the pucks and spring in them to tune them. They use pucks that slide out instead of weights, inside the bell. More or heavier ones make it engage at lower rpm, depending on what spring is used. Longer spring is higher engagement, stiffer is higher shift rpm once moving. |

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
what about when its in neutral and you rev the engine?
Why does it stop without the belt on? wouldnt that be the secondary clutch?? |

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
These are stock clutches, a 94 that engages at higher rpm might close a little slower but usually they are set somewhat close to stock....unless it was changed.

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
Ok, I would think it would lock up if it were gears. Don't say that, it will be expensive! And we don't do expensive here. These cars don't have enough power to break gears!!
Start thinking about cables out of adjustment. Stuff like that!! Drain oil into catch pan, sift through oil and see what you find. Any possibility it could be a spider? |

Re: Opinions on a g8 or g9
turned it by hand and it would catch and would be really hard to turn and sometimes couldnt. drained it and had about twice the amount needed. did notice it had been apart seeing the orange rtv silicone in the oil and on the mating surfaces
