Default OK G1 Guys, need advice/input please!

Ok, I know all of us G1 guys know the potential of a 2 stroke, and we've all read the "get more HP" threads for our G1's, and we know that it ain't a big block and it ain't a sled engine....but...isn't there more we can do to make these things run to their max potential?

I've seen Plowman's muffler, sheaves, etc. But has anyone ever tried a tuneable clutch like on an atv or snowmobile? It seems to me that our 2 stroke engines power peak is in the 3000 - 4000 rpm range, correct? Well, why are our drive clutches engaging at 500 rpm?

Can't we get a clutch tuned to take off at say 1000 or 1500 rpm and be in the power just of idle?

Anyone ever tried one of these?

I'd be open to trying one out if I heard anyone has used one. I can't find any threads on anyone ever doing this....

This is pure speculation, but I'm thinking that if the clutch would engage at 1000+ rpm the thing would lose all it's slow speed abilities (classic tradeoff). My cart spends the majority of it's time in an RV park and operated and 5 mph or less and pulls things around (alternate tow vehicle). I don't think it would work for my uses. Might be fun on the trails but not for going slow.

I think I may not have explained myself right.....correct me if I'm wrong....

Having the clutch engage at a higher rpm wouldn't raise the ground speed of the cart. just the rpm the engine is at when the clutch engages. The amount of power being supplied at low speeds would be higher because now the engine is operating 500 rpm higher at the same speeds. Low speed performance would actually increase because the engine would be closer to the "powerband" at the time the clutch engages. So towing boats and campers at the campgrounds would be easier. You can still control the throttle with your right foot, and that would increase ground speed as you normally would.

I know in the atv world they sell different weights, rollers, helix's, and springs to achieve the very same thing, more power at slower speeds.

My intent here is to find out if anyone has ever done this and how did it work? Heck, I could just be totally wrong....

I just installed the machined sheave for the driven clutch from CPP and it kinda does what your asking. You get to the power band a whole lot sooner

How is that working for you? I also am considering the same. I guess I'd like to see if I can get this G1 to work better for towing/working, plowing, and trail riding and hill climbing.

I'm not real interested in making this thing go 35mph...that's not realistic. But right now I'm topping out at 21 mph and just not happy with the operation of the clutches.

I haven't lost any of my top end and when climbing it hits tue power band sooner and doesn't bog down in the low rpms like it used to. Also I did the power spring and hd belt

Well I just ordered the Plowmans Hot Setup for the G1. Muffler, Jet kit, and secondary clutch kit. Don Plowman assured me that I'd be pleased with the performance. I know the clutching is not right in my cart. I thought it was the primary but Don is sure it's the secondary. I guess the secondary is the "transmission" of the cart. I'm kinda new to the cvt world, but what Don had to say made alot of sense.

That is exactly what you needed to turn over those big tires that you have now. It might not be a speed demon but it will crawl over anything.

Hope the parts come quick. Looking forward to trying them out. Hope they do what I think they'll do.

Speed and power are always a trade off, you give up one to get the other. The goal being to arrive at a balance to suit your needs. The stock speed on my G1 is 12 mph, if you are getting 21 then you have increased speed by over 75% which is awesome. To have more "power" you have to change the mechanical gearing so the engine runs in the peak of its power band which will cause you to loose top end speed. A stronger spring in the secondary clutch will give you the mechanical advantage (higher gear ratio) you need for power and hopefully you don't loose much on the top end.
