97 club car installing lights
hello everyone....new guy here....okiewade....I have just purchased a '97 club car, 48v (6- 8volt batt.) I am trying to add lights...purchased a converter....30-60v input, 12v out...10 amp. Got lights for auto type application, told they would work for golf cart. Could not determine if converter needed to be grounded to frame....I know there is nothing else grounded to frame. Anyway hooked it all up and when I tried to hook up ground wire from converter to negative battery post there was a spark like a short. Light system utilized relay and on/off switch. Took out all relay and switches and came off of converter with supposed 12v to lights. White lead to light white lead and black lead to negative battery terminal from lights. Nothing.....unhooked all wires and that's where I am at now....what have I done wrong and does the converter need to be grounded to the frame on the black lead.....converter has three leads red to 30-60v input power....yellow for 12v output...and black for ground. The system is isolated....nothing I can see is grounded to the frame anywhere on the cart. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 97 club car installing lights
Welcome to the forum okiewade..........................
I can't help much in this area (because I dont know anything about your converter) but frame ground is Not used. It will only cause you problems. Make sure the relay is not a grounded type. Yes, start with the basics to get them to work first. Make sure you have a volt meter DVM, or VOM or light bulb to see if the converter is working. There will be others who will jump in here to help out. What town in Oklahoma are you located? |

Re: 97 club car installing lights
I am located on Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma.....we have cabin rentals and the cart comes in really handy for all kinds of things....going to lift it probably 3 inches this winter....kinda rough around here....thanks for the info...it was an auto relay so I am sure it was a grounded relay....still got the spark after taking the relay and switch out of the circuit....no spark when I took the converter out of the circuit.....I think I will wire for the double pole, single throw circuit and to heck with the converters.....okiewade....
