Default Proper Wiring

Installed a volt meter this weekend and used Option 2 from ScottyB. With the key off it is still reading 16.4 volts. With the key on it reads over 50 volts. I do have two wires installed to two of my batteries which is where I assume is is getting the 16 volts from.

My lights are also wired thru these connections as when I disconnect them the lights no longer work.

Where should these connections be made so they no longer function with the key off?

I ordered meters from ScottyB last night, but I don't have them yet so I'm not sure what option 2 is. Generally the meter is switched by the key as it sounds like you are doing. As CTD said, the blue wire should be switched, and thus full pack voltage when key is turned on and 0 voltage when key is turned off. I use that wire to trigger my meters and voltage reducers.

In my novice knowledge, voltage on that blue keyswitch wire would be concerning. You may want to trace that wire to understand where it goes/what it actually is used for. And you may also reference some of the stock wiring info in the stickies above to compare.

This sounds like a post we just had. Cart would run with key off.

Apparently I was wrong. It is the blue wire wired direct to the battery.

Where should these wires be connected?

Nope the reducer is the red and black wire you see and I have it wired to 48 volts. There is a red wire crimped to a blue wire in the positive of the middle right battery and a black wire connected to the negative of the middle left battery. I moved these to the 48 v lugs and it blew my bulbs so they are connected in some way to my headlights.
