Default g2/g9 yamaha wiring

I have a g2 or g9 gas Yamaha golf cart im rebuilding from ground up. my question is can I wire it so that I use a push button for the starter and the engine keeps running when I take my foot off the gas pedal?, and if I can will it still charge the battery while running? does anyone have any schematics for something like this?

The simplest way to do what you are asking is probably to just remove the pedal switch (Start/Stop Switch) and re-wire and replace it with a SPST (Single Pole, Single Through) switch.

You could mount this switch on the panel somewhere near the key. To run the cart, just turn the key on and flip the (newly relocated) start/stop switch on. When you want it to shut it off, flip the switch off.

Now, there are a few other issues to consider, like the engine spinning for long(er) periods of time with the belt "dragging" on the clutch.

Another is the potential for the cart to move at idle, unless you're very consistent about using the brake.

Another is that these engines are designed to have airflow when running. So, long periods of idle with no cart movement might cause heating issues.

There may be others that I'm not smart enough to think about.

But, as for the wiring.....I think this would be the most practical, simple solution.

Others may have other ideas and cautions.

Good Luck,
Todd

Here you go for it to stay idling and I believe to get a push button switch to work.

The battery will charge with the cart at a higher rpm not at an idling rpm

Oh, and yes, using the method I described the S/G will charge the battery.

Maybe not at idle, but when running with a high enough engine RPM.

If you jump out the pedal switch, it will start when you turn on the key.

You also need to set the idle speed on the carb so it runs faster than the starter and idles well, or it will deplete the battery running the starter. Many carts are not set to idle you have to play with the idle mixture to get it to idle nice and slow.

If it does not idle the starter will try to turn it and run the battery down, so you can idle it really slow so it drags the belt less and all, but make sure it keeps running a little faster than the starter....is all I'm saying. It takes a couple tries on the mixture to get it right usually or it will idle slow and then quit. Most engines will not idle that slow but these will.
